発表直後、ロジャーマッギンの１２弦ギターとともにバーズのバージョンが、全米ナンバー１になった。美しい言葉が次から次へ出てくる。ミスタータンブリンマンとは誰なのか？これまでさまざまな解釈がなされてきた。しかし間違いない。これは完全なドラッグソングに違いない。いやかつてはドラッグソングだったと言えるかもしれない。
コーラス部分のサビから始まって、４番まである６分近い曲である。ハーモニカのソロの部分も聞かせどころだ。一方バーズのバージョンは２番だけの短縮形である。２番だけだとゆかいな魔法の世界を歌った健全な歌にきこえる。
６６年のライブでは、髄所に長いハーモニカソロがあって、９分近い演奏である。ギターの音がなくなってハーモニカのベンドの音だけになる部分は何度聴いてもゾクゾクする。
しかし、その後のバングラディシュやローリングサンダーではアコースティックだが３番が割愛されている。このころからバーズのバージョンが意識されてるようだ。
７８年武道館のライブでは、大人数のバッキングで、女子コーラス、フルート、エレキをバックに完全な超ド級の完璧なPOPソングとして歌っている。
世の中が変わり、ディランもそれを理解した上で別な曲として歌っているようだ。
以下はオリジナルにもとづきドラッグソングとして訳してみた。

夜になった今、昼間の喧騒のなかの仕事（ライブや取材対応？）で疲れている。外には行きたくないし、眠くもない。そんなときに家にいながら別な世界に連れ出してくてるもの。そいつはミスタータンブリンマンである。それは人ではない。まさにドラックに違いない。ドラッグに身を任せるだけで、別な世界に誘ってくれる。

３番になるとドラッグによる幻覚がだんだん起こってくる。そして、幻覚で聞こえてくるタンバリンのリズムにのって踊りだす。

４番には、「ダイヤモンドの空」がでてくる。ダイヤモンドの空と言えば、ビートルズの「ルーシーインザスカイウィズダイヤモンズ（LSD）６７年」を思いうかべるだろう。ディランがジョンにあったのは６４年ごろなので、こちらが本家である。ジョンレノンはディランから多くの影響を受けている。ディランは作詞の分野だけでなく、クスリもビートルズに教えるという貢献をしている。ディランもそうだ、曲調などビートルズからの影響も大きい。
幻覚にはちがいないが、時空を自由に飛び回る情景が美しい。それにもまして美しい言葉で美しく語られる。
