１，はじめに
リパプール。
ビートルズの聖地である。
ビートルズのメンバーが幼少期をすごし、バンド活動をはじめ、ここから世界に飛び立っていった。
数々ある聖地のなかから、楽曲としてのこっている３箇所を紹介する。
１９６７年にイエローサブマリンとカップリングで両A面で発表された「エリナー・リグビー」、翌１９６８年に両A面として発表された、「ペニーレイン」と「イストロベリーフィールズフォーエバー」.
「エリナーリグビー」の墓のあるセントピーターズ教会、床屋さんのあるペニーレン、ジョンの遊び場だった孤児院のストロベリーフィールズすべてリバプールの郊外にあり、徒歩圏内にある。そして、ジョンが１８歳まで過ごした，メンベローブアベニューのミミおばさんの家や、ポールの生まれ育った家にもほど近い。
ジョンもポールもリバプールの思い出の場所を歌にしている。たぶん示し合わせて作ったのだと思うが、どちらかが先に思いついて、一方が対抗心でそれにぶつけてきたのだろう。ともかくも創造力を刺激し合ういいコンビであることにかわりがない。
そして、その描き方の対比が個性が際立って面白い。
ポールはユーモアたっぷりに現実の情景を潰さに描写してみせる。魅力的な登場人物がでてきて、そこから新しいものがたりが始まりそうだ。曲調も軽快でのりがよい。実はベース音の選び方など複雑なコード進行である。でもそれが自然であり複雑さを感じさせないのがポールらしい。爽快なピッコロの間奏も挿入される。
対するジョンは自分の内面に深く入り込んでいく。語りかけるような優しいことばだが、奥が深い。瞑想や東洋思想などの影響もあるのだろう。一見曲調も難解で複雑だ。でも実は簡単な和音しか使ってはいない。しかしその組み合わせが妙であり、最後までKEYがどこかわからない。オーケストラによる複雑な効果音も挿入される。
両者ともに共通しているのは、少年時代を過ごしたリバプールであり、そこが心の拠り所になっているということである。
そして、この２曲が両A面のシングルで発売になっているというのは奇蹟である。
２，ペニーレイン

ペニーレインの交差点、真ん中にあるのが、「看護婦がポピーを売る暗線地帯」でバス停になっている、「写真を飾る床屋さん」もこの交差点にある。この床屋さんの前で「土砂降りの雨のなかで銀行員がかっぱも着ないで待って」いて、「いつも消防車をピカピカにしてい消耗師が女王様の写真を懐にいれて駆け込んでくる」のだ。
３，ストロベリーフィールズフォーエバー
ストロベリーフィールズはジョンが幼いころに遊んでいた救世軍所有の孤児院であり、建物は今はビジターセンターとして作り変えられているが、聖地となった赤い門はいまもそのまま残っている。
「ジョンの木」はこの中にあるのだろうか？その木に鳥は留まっているのだろうか？

４，エリナー・リグビー
エリナー・リグビーは実在の人物だった。ジョンの家（ミミおばさんの家）にほど近いところにあるセントピーターズ教会で、エリナー・リグビーの墓が見つかった。すくそばにはこの教会の神父だったマッケンジー氏の墓も見つかっている。
